Cisco Catalyst 8000V Edge Software Ordering Guide

Cisco^® Catalyst^® 8000V Edge Software (Catalyst 8000V) is the next generation virtual router designed for multicloud deployments connecting customer endpoints from cloud to edge. The Catalyst 8000V can be deployed in the cloud marketplace (AWS, Azure, and GCP) on-premises or in a colocation facility, and at virtualized branch locations.

The Catalyst 8000V is a unified image that can boot in both Controller and Autonomous mode and is the successor to the currently shipping Cisco Cloud Services Router 1000V and Integrated Services Virtual Router.

The Catalyst 8000V must be ordered with a mandatory Cisco DNA subscription license and can be deployed in either traditional routing or SD-WAN mode.

This ordering guide takes you through the steps of ordering the hardware platforms and the Cisco DNA subscriptions.

The software image itself can be downloaded from the Cisco software webpage.

Ordering Cisco Catalyst 8000V Edge Software

The Catalyst 8000V requires a mandatory Cisco DNA subscription license. Cisco DNA subscription licenses are common across SD-WAN and traditional routing deployments, giving customers flexibility to consume the latest technology, either in the cloud or on-premises. All Cisco DNA subscription tiers require a Smart Account/Virtual Account (SA/VA). Cisco DNA for SD-WAN and Routing subscription licenses include embedded SWSS support ONLY for the subscription functionality (Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager, Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Controller, Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Validator, Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Analytics, Cisco Umbrella, Cisco SIG Essentials, etc.) enabled by the Cisco DNA Subscriptions (Cisco DNA Essentials, Advantage, and Premier). Use the part number mentioned in Table 1 to order subscription licenses for the Catalyst 8000V.

Working with the L-DNA-C8000V license

Ordering the Cisco DNA subscription license using L-DNA-C8000V can be completed in four simple steps:

1. Select the platform.

2. Select the software mode (the management type).

3. Choose the Cisco DNA subscription part number (i.e., DNA-C-T3-A-3Y).

4. Expand export compliance licenses (C8000V-HSEC).

Select your preferred platform. Also order the required Cisco DNA subscription license that meets your needs, as shown in the following screenshot.

2. Select the software mode (management mode)

Select the preferred software mode, which indicates the management type used (as shown in the following screenshot).

3. Choose the Cisco DNA subscription SKU

Next, choose the Cisco DNA subscription SKU based on the management type, preferred bandwidth, tier, and term requirements (as shown in the following screenshot).

Note: A Tier 1 bandwidth license provides entitlement for 400Mbps aggregate crypto throughput with HSEC. However, one-way encrypted traffic must be less than 250Mbps. For instance, 250Mbps download and 150Mbps upload would work but 300Mbps download and 100Mbps upload would be throttled down to 250Mbps and 100Mbps.

4. Expand export compliance licenses (C8000V-HSEC)

When you choose a Cisco DNA subscription license greater than or equal to Tier T1, the C8000V-HSEC is automatically expanded. This is not an HSEC license by itself; rather, it entitles the customer to an HSEC license.

Cloud marketplace offers

There are two options for users to consume the Catalyst 8000V in the cloud marketplace. The first is the Bring-Your-Own-License (BYOL) model, in which a user purchases their Catalyst 8000V Cisco DNA license from Cisco and deploys it in the cloud. The second option is the Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) model, in which users can deploy a Catalyst 8000V instance in the cloud and purchase the usage on an hourly basis.

Bring your own license

The BYOL solution enables customers to purchase a Catalyst 8000V Cisco DNA license from Cisco or a Cisco partner and deploy the license in the cloud. See the earlier section on ordering a Catalyst 8000V Cisco DNA license.

Pay as you go

The PAYG options allow users to consume the Catalyst 8000V on an hourly basis without having to prepay for a term subscription license.

There are two PAYG options for consuming licenses in the AWS marketplace:

● Catalyst 8000V Cisco DNA Essentials

● Catalyst 8000V Cisco DNA Advantage

The section below outlines the BYOL and PAYG offers in the three cloud marketplaces with Catalyst 8000V support: AWS, Azure, and GCP.

AWS marketplace

Users can select a range of AWS EC2 instances for their cloud networking needs powered by Cisco’s Catalyst 8000V virtual router. The figure below shows how to select a cloud instance.
